I’ve really come to love the simplicities and challenges of Kings of War, and if any of you have been reading for a while you’ll know that I have loved (the now out-of-print) Warmaster through the years in all of its forms. So, here is an exhibition of my 10mm Kings of War armies I’ve prepared. I took some time to reorganize the armies (and in one case repaint the army) into forces for Kings of War. It really works out great with very few hurdles. Here is a shot of my decisions about the basing requirements:

from right to left you see a “troop” stand, then a “regiment” stand, a “horde” is 2×2 troops, then a legion is 2 wide x 3 deep. I put all character models on round bases about the size of a U.S. nickel, except sometimes I put army commanders on a larger circular base to create a small diorama. Monsters usually get a base that supports the model and are not in relation to sizes suggested by the rules. For “Large Infantry” I use the 20mm x 40mm bases that you see a “troop” mounted on in the photo above. I do, however try to stick to the 3 models per base. A “horde” of “Large Infantry” uses the same footprint as a “regiment” of regular infantry. Based on the chart in the rulebook, these basing assignments are just slightly off in proportion to the suggested sizes.

I currently have the following armies:

Elves

Dwarves

Kingdoms of Men

Empire of Dust and

Abyssal

I use http://kow2.easyarmy.com/ to whip together my army lists. I love that site!

All together I can throw down a 20,000 point battle. I love the massed-battle look and can use a smaller battlefield space if I want. Plus, if I use my normal 4×6 space, suddenly I have a lot more room to maneuver and play with different strategies. I usually manipulate the rules in two ways:

  1. I will halve all of the measurements and distances as prescribed by the army lists and rules. And,
  2. If I want to play a REALLY fast game on a 4×6 board, I keep the measurements and distances the same as they appear in the rules.
